The impending local government elections
have not had the proper analysis it deserves by the Media, as I suspect there
is no one in the media who is sufficiently knowledgeable in the subject to even
comment on the effectiveness, sense and unique set of circumstances that is
being created that requires critical analysis.
Here I am referring to the impending
ballot, where for the first time in over 20 years other than at a General or
Presidential Election, the whole country, votes at the same time for their local
representatives in their area. In that sense we will have results at WARD level
of the breakdown, OFFICIALLY, rather than in previous elections where this
breakdown was not available and subject to some form of inside shenanigans that
changed the result in favor of a local heavyweight.
I have previously noted my opposition to
the holding of these elections, most importantly due to the format that
prevents, individual persons, of high standing and reputation, who do not and
do not wish to belong to a political party from contesting. That to me is a violation
of one’s right to put one’s hat in the ring for one’s own local community and
for the voter to have a choice other than a party.
This link is to a previous entry about it,
and it was well received with many comments and suggestions of how we should
conduct it in the interests of the public, who have a right to vote for people
of their choice. So NOT people chosen for them by some leader of a political
party, as those people have been chosen for reasons, other than their
integrity, often because they are the local godfather involved in some racket
or other.
This unique election will give an indication
of the pulse of the people, and while at the same time provide the first
indication of the level of support for the joint opposition, led by a former president
notorious for his dictatorial style of rule and family bandyism, that kept
others out of sharing the spoils, which to date has not been found and retrieved
and given back to the nation.
It will show the strength exercised by
the minorities in Sri Lanka, who traditionally vote along their ethnic and religious
lines, much to the chagrin of people like me who are looking for a Sri Lankan
Identity devoid of ethnic bias, for the greater good and to generate a sense of
loyalty to motherland first, instead of their ethnic subgroup which in any case
is a recent concept, as gene testing will prove we are all from one stock,
intermarried and inter related, and religion and language we have chosen are
only of recent origin, that bears little resemblance to our origins in the
first place.
It is time that this unique event is
immortalized, analyzed and reported upon carefully, not being incendiary, but
being inclusive to highlight the ridiculous.

The reality has not dawned on anyone yet, except those who are trying to capitalize on this for their own selfish ends.
For example the new United National Freedom Front ( Eksath Jathika Nidhahas Peramuna) is quietly trying to tell people to get together with them and be freed from Slavery! Enna Nivahal Wenna. This is a clever ploy directed at the dissatisfied, who instead of being freed will fall from the frying pan to the fire, into the realms of the unknown.
This lot are trying to field candidates wherever they can, and have applied for people to join them to seek nomination. If they succeed in fielding names wherever they wish, then the Sirasa campaign will light up at the last minute to persuade the public to vote for them, all part of the Sirasa game plan, begun by the highly successful Gammedda program that has built a veneer of credibility that they seek to turn into votes.
Ironically all major parties are treating them as a joke, without realizing that the power of Sirasa, in which this front is merely a pawn for their use, and the UNFF's Guneratne just another slave of their machination, will carry the day in the media to attract all who are disgruntled with the existing players
Make no bones about it, this is pure opportunism trying to fill a vacuum, left for them to fill, as the Govt in their foolishness have played right into their arms.

Everyone says SL is too highly politicized. Now they are going to increase the members in this Local Govt to over 8500 and this was announced in the papers last week. No one appears to have raised a loud hollar, let alone a raised eyebrow.
When the shit finally hits people will be shouting from the rafters, what a stupid nation of delayed reaction, when nothing can be done about it once the damage has been inflicted.
