The Local Government Elections, presents the voter with a Hobson’s Choice, meaning no real choice at all – so should anyone go and cast their ballot?

YES GO AND SHOW YOUR DISGUST BY SPOILING YOUR VOTE

THAT IS THE ONLY LEGAL AND DEMOCRATIC MEANS WE HAVE LEFT TO EXPRESS OUR DISGUST AT THE CHOICE BEFORE US – ALL OF QUESTIONABLE INTEGRITY!

As if this point has not been enunciated sufficiently, “For successful Local Government Decision Making, Politics should not enter into it, as it is local matters that affect everyone who lives there are decided, and that should not take a political overtone, just common sense decision making for the greater good. This form of Government is best served by elected Independents, representing their communities, who CAN join and make decision for the greater good and not for a personal agenda like beginning one’s career in politics.

It is quite clear that law makers when passing the recent Local Government Amendment ACT, deliberately scuppered the rights of individuals to contest as Independents.

Many very upstanding people in the community, with the public interest at heart, do not wish to have any party allegiances. They cannot put their hat in the ring, unless they come up with a party of sorts, slate of names, for the whole Municipality, an impractical choice, as you cannot contest independently in your ward only!

In any language what parliament passed was both a violation of our Human Rights, and Fundamental Rights, except when they pass the Act we cannot file under the FR process.

Therefore this Act of Parliament, fundamentally violates an individual’s human rights, in that he has lost the opportunity of being represented by one who is truly capable of ensuring that the wheels of the law, work in accordance with fairness, and so is left with NO choice. One must understand that all Political Parties have been discredited, and so no one other than a few die hard supporters, wish to elect a person from one of these parties.

It is obvious that individuals have NO say in who is nominated by their respective party. Often it is NOT the most suitable person who is given the ticket even when the party had more honorable people applying. There is NO real vetting process where the application is looked at independently to determine the suitability and community standing of the nominee. It usually goes to a nominee of a local thug!

What can you expect from a Country, that has elected Asses to legislate for them. They have no clue about what it is their voting on, and are too frightened to express an opinion on behalf the people. So it is your fault, spoiling the vote is the only choice, when everyone on the ballot paper is a crook

Come to think of it, only individuals should be allowed to contest, and not political parties. That way, there will be less corruption, and local people known to the community will get elected, unlike the retards on the list at present.

Also corruption and waste of people's money will be reduced, the local people will make decisions that benefit the local community, which is the whole idea of local politics and democracy.

The national politics psyche that otherwise dominates will then not taint these elections.

Wishful thinking in Sri Lanka I know, but something to seriously consider if we want to take out community back from the clutches of excreta that currently rule.

Never going to happen, as people don't believe there is an alternative. The best they chose is a lesser of two horrible evils or so they evaluate. Whither democracy with that logic?

Too late now. however moves are a foot to postpone them indefinitely over a legal technicality

Hardly surprising they don't allow Independents. It will destroy the myth of any need for the existing political parties at least in Local Government.

this is a system created for the benefit of the political parties, not the people who are supposed to be served by these parties. blast the party system and enable individual sovereignty with internet-enabled communal decision making. no need for representatives with the power of the internet!

There has been a concerted campaign to say this new Local Govt system is better as it permits local people to vote for a local man. What they have NOT explained is that only Parties can contest, even it it is an independent party that has to pay 5000 deposit per person for each and every ward of a pradeshiya sabha. So the party person is on the ballot, and not necessarily the best person.

Unless individuals are allowed there is NO choice. So there is no democracy. Even worse NO ONE I have spoken to approve of a near doubling of members. So if we just take that point alone, again this is a sham, creating more politicians who can make money from the citizens who they have sworn to serve.

Why can't the morons in parliament understand that in both scenarios, they are doing an injustice?

Some publicity seeker called Maithri Guneratne and his sycophants have set up a party and are desperately trying to entice people saying they are an alternative party, and asking people to join them and contest under their banner. A wolf in sheep's clothing, don't go from the frying pan into the fire.

Why should they be better than the existing jokers? After all he was a breakaway joker, who while trying to put one foot in three camps found he had only two feet at anyone time! They are ex other party men for God's sake and therefore damaged goods expelled and lackeys of the maharaja organization, just like many of the pimps in the UNP and SLFP.

No parties of any sort, just principled people who Independently want to contest with NO baggage to represent the small area that they live in only. Is that too much to ask?

I want to know if there is going to be a manifesto by each party for each Authority? So will the UNP have a manifesto they give the voters for the CMC, about what they are promising to do for them, only directed at the residents of the CMC area. Will they promise to reduce air pollution? not just the pollution of the garbage.
