I know people have been saying it for 70+
years – but I will repeat it this time too. Sri Lanka is at a watershed event
now, where the election results will determine how we emerge from the
unprecedented crisis we find ourselves in, a much worse state than most other
countries on earth, despite the major backslapping still unabashedly going on
for winning the Covid 19 war!
The reality is that the Economy is
faltering, while policies to date have not helped in reducing the impact of the
fall, and the people are being misled that whoever comes to power that things
will improve. Whoever manages to form a government, will face an impossible 5
years, a whole term where if not carefully managed the Country could fall into
chaos, starvation, and unrest, further justifying the use of security forces to
quell the hunger of an increasingly agitated populace. Those who can will take
their money and leave. God help the rest of us
The race card will be played out with a
vengeance in blaming all the ills on a minority community, who will be singled
out as being wealthy, and whose wealth could even be confiscated by fair means
or foul, as they will have no recourse of legal means for defense, when the law
of the jungle reigns supreme.
If the SLPP faction wins, then there
will be a further move towards China’s sphere of influence, increasing Chinese Power
within SL, so much as to sell most of the sellable assets to pay for the regime’s
very survival, at the expense of the people. The very sin they are accusing all
opposing parties of being engaged in!
Without a vision or concerted effort to
increase productive capacity of industries, especially the most inefficient being
agriculture, as the inputs of imports needed to increase productivity have been
banned, and there is little incentive on the part of the state to use the
latest technology in producing healthy food for the nation’s people to consume.
Stopping food imports will only create chaos.
The sad fact is neither party engaged in
electoral politics has even touched upon the basic right of citizens, freedom
from hunger and ensuring food security and the protection of those who grow the
food from theft, and being left bereft, due to the inability to market as the
populace is too poor to buy despite being hungry~!
The END RESULT in trying to hold onto
power in a Country where there is civil unrest, will be to use the Security forces
to keep the peace and keep the people cowed down and in fear, where the rule
will be simply by fear of arrest and incarceration. Man you don’t know what is
in it for you or me! A dictatorship.
How
come after 70 years of broken promises we still fall for the same crap?

Spot on - Food Security is the need of the hour, when Globalization is under threat. It does not have to mean you produce all the food you need. In fact you produce whatever it is you are good at producing, and export what you don't need or grow only for export because you are very competitive in it, such as Ceylon Cinnamon, but then with the export earnings you can purchase the foreign food that you need or want in a free market.
There has never been a vision of identifying the 10% of farmers who are the real Goviyas in Sri Lanka from the rest who don't have it in them to plant a damn thing except that the Govt has given them land, because of politics, and placed them in slavery in their own land
The present election campaign is a sham. The opposition is divided fighting amongst themselves, while the Government side is busy diverting the people's attention from the core problems facing the economy. In the end the vote will be cast not on who is best equipped to save the backsides of the general public from starvation, but on some racist issue, or some contrived of false sense of security. In the end the voter will pay the price for his or her own foolishness, as they have no one else to blame but themselves for the daylight robbery perpetuated against them, by whoever comes to power that they elect.
It is again trying to find the lesser of two evils from a very bad crop of politicians. Sad
Politics is entertainment in Sri Lanka as the poor people have nothing else to look forward to in their wretched lives. At least going to a meeting and listening to bull shit, may reward them with a cup of tea and cake, or even if they are lucky, like the SLPP with their massive amount of stolen money from the people are distributing some of it to households in the form of 5kg of rice, 1kg of potato, 1kg of big onions, 1kg of dhal in the hope that the voter remembers this largesse when going to vote. It may work. It has done so in the past and Sri Lanka has professional politicians experienced in the art of fooling the masses for their votes, and the public keep electing the same rogues time and time again, sometimes agreeing they are crooks, in the absence of honest people seeking election from respectable parties.
Ranil Wickremesinghe had the ideal opportunity to at least field a slate of honest, able, capable and proven candidates for the UNP as the rogues went with Sajith. He did not, with the biggest rogue of all Ravi K being given a prominent position in the campaign.
At least he could have contested on a slate of honesty and integrity despite the questionable appointments he made during his tenure, there is absolutely no evidence that he has ever profited from politics in his 40+ years in this game. That is very different to what we can say about MR and his stooges and the billions socked away from deals.
My Prediction
The US (and probably the UK) is going go thru economic and social collapse.
The Perfect storm is brewing
a) Covid numbers are reaching unmanageable number. A very high likelihood, it will come raging in even greater strengh
b) Unemployment is going thru the roof.
c) China and Russia are in the process of unveiling an alternative to SWIFT. That will collapse the dollar.
Raging Covid and unemployment will continue to fuel the chaos and unrest in the US.
So Ranjit, can we make a bet;
By next June 23 the US will be in much worse shape than Sri Lanka.
Can we decide on some indicators. eg Covid per capita deaths, Police shootings/capita.
